CONCERT RECORDING 12/11/17

Dear Woodbury HS Band Students,

I am so proud to have been on stage performing with you all last night!  All four groups and all chamber ensembles reflected preparation, artistry, and passion for music last night.  It certainly was a fun night that showed the skills you are growing and gaining in band at WHS.  All of the feedback I received from family, friends, parents, and colleagues was positive and complimentary.  Let's set our goals to keep raising the bar as we move into contest season and beyond.  We have such tremendous potential!

Sincerely,

Mr. Katzenmeyer

  1. 1. I would do a CMP project on Festal Scenes because I love how the song sounds and it presented a challenge for me to overcome this concert cycle.
    2. Festal Scenes required the most individual preparation because of the amount of tuning, tempo following, and dynamic contrast that was demanded in the song.
    3. It's still a work in progress, but improving my overall high range will help me maintain the pitch of the high notes that I play, especially on pieces like Posy or Festal Scenes.
    4. Shout-out to Sam for his stunning Bassoon solo and Connor for his amazing Bass Clarinet work on Festal Scenes!

  2. 1) Festal Scenes because it was the coolest piece that we played and was culturally different

    2) Festal Scenes

    3) Listen more, focus on intonation

    4) Sam Olson for that fire solo, Simon Miller for the electrocuted horse

  3. 1. I would do a CMP project on Festal Scenes because I would like to know more about the different songs and what they represent.
    2. Tuning the timpani on Posy required the most individual preparation for me.
    3. Going forward, I can work on my timpani tuning skills to help improve ensemble performance.
    4. Shout out to Joe Condon for rocking those big bass drum hits!

  4. 1) Lincolnshire Posy. Learning about the second movement last concert cycle was facinating, and I would have loved to dig deeper behind the first and sixth movement too
    2) festal scenes. It took a lot of work to coordinate my fingers and tongue especially at the end
    3) I need to work more on dynamics especially on English horn, since I tend to just play fortissimo so that I can be heard
    4) shoutout to Simon for the horse neigh at the end of sleigh ride!

  5. 1. Festal Scenes. We sorta discussed the names of the movements, but it'd be really fun to look into the individual meanings behind them, particularly for such a challenging piece.

    2. Definitely Festal Scenes. Bach was pretty easy, Sleigh Ride wasn't too tough, and Posy's 3rd trumpet part isn't very much at all. Festal Scenes triplet runs were killer.

    3. I guess I could've put in a little more practice into Festal Scenes. I slipped up torwards the end, but I guess you couldn't hear it.

    4. Shout out to main man Sam Olson for being in band, and Simóne Milla for his fire whiny.

  6. 1. I would do a CMP project for Sleigh Ride because I think it would be really interesting to know the history behind such a popular song.
    2. Festal Scenes required the most preparation for me because I needed to work on my fingering at such a fast tempo.
    3. I could work on my technique at fast tempos or with sixteenth notes to improve for the next concert.
    4. Shout out to Rachel for the amazing timpani part at the end of Festal Scenes.

  7. 1- I would do a CMP project on Festal Scenes so that I could learn more about the regions the different parts came from.
2- Posy required the most individual preparation.
3- To personally improve going forward I can work on my technical fingering abilities, so I can move my fingers faster.
4- Shoutout to Kate and Rachel at the end of Festal Scenes and to the bassoons and tubas at the Bach transitions.

  8. 1) I would do Festal Scenes. I found all the different sections interesting and unique. I think it'd be very interesting to learn more about the history of the piece. I also found the influence of Taiko drumming very interesting.
    2) The 6th movement of Lincolnshire Posy required the most individual preparation for me. I just had to make sure that I was getting all the right notes and staying at the appropriate tempo.
    3) Personally I think I just need to focus on making sure that I'm staying 100% rhythmically accurate and feeling tempo more.
    4) Shoutout to Rachel for nailing her timpani solo in Festal Scenes.

  9. 1. I would probably make a Cmp project about festal scenes because it would be interisting to learn about music from different countries
    2. Weirdly the piece that took the most individual preperation for me was sleigh ride because it was strange to keep tempo playing on every beat while switching the notes especially in the middle section
    3. I think going forward in band on both alto and bari i need to work on my lower and upper range so i can play and learn parts quickly without worrying about hitting notes
    4. I think sam the bassoon man nailed his solo in festal scenes and it was really fun to hear

  10. 1. If I were to do a CMP I would pick “Lincolnshire Posy” for it to be about, because there has already been CMP projects about that so I could easily copy them.
    2. The most preparation I had to do was on Posy I, as I could not play it whatsoever until I had practiced it.
    3. I could improve on timing, because I was late in a few entrances.
    4. Simon Miller was pretty good on his solo in Lincolnshire Posy

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1. I would do a cmp project of Lincoln shire posy because it had the most contrasting movements.

2.Lincoln shire posy required the most amount of individual preparation due to the complex rhythm and fingerings.

    3. I would like to work on confidence and style going forward.

    4. I'd like to give a shoutout to Symphony band! You guys are a small ensemble but you guys rocked!

    ReplyDelete
  12. 1) festel scenes becuase it was the most unique of our pieces
2)Lincolnshire posy. Just because of its rhythmic complexity
3)probably play louder and more confidently on bass clarinet.
    4) basson sam, for the good solo.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1) I would do a CMP project in Lincolnshire Posy because the piece is based on folk songs which already have such an interesting history behind them that would be fun to explore more.

    2) Festal Scenes required the most individual preparation because of the fast tempo.

    3) Going forward, I can work on broader dynamics and better intonation to improve ensemble performance.

    4) All the soloists did a really good job!

    ReplyDelete
  14. 1. I would do a CMP for Sleigh Ride because it's festive and fun to play.
    2. Festal Scenes required the most individual work because it was very fast and the flutes had to focus on tuning.
    3. I can continue to work on tuning long notes.
    4. Shout out to Rachel for her solo.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1. If I were to do a CMP Project I would have done it on Festal Scenes because it is the most fun percussion wise and you can really hear the parade coming from the distance.
    2. Posy took the most personal preparation (Even though percussion doesnt play much) because doing octaves while watching Mr. Katzenmeyer is a little difficult.
    3. For the next concert I want to work on knowing where my hands go without thinking that way I can watch better.
    4. Shout out to Rachel Yurik who stepped up to fill in for someone in another band who couldn't make it. No one could tell that she was sight reading! Way to go!

  16. 1. If I were to do a CMP on one of the pieces I would do it on sleigh ride. I think it would be interesting to find out more about such a popular song. And also I LOVE christmas.

    2. Post

3.Going forward, I can improve on moving my fingers even faster, and also to tune the really high notes.

    4. I would like to give a shout out to the percussion for being amazing, and sounding amazing in festal scenes and sleigh ride!!

  17. 1. I would love to make a CMP project for Sleigh Ride. I’ve heard it for years, and I think we would be able to make a very fun project similar to the Star Wars CMP project done by the concert band a few years ago. It would be something we could have fun with.
    2. Festal Scenes required a lot of preparation on my part. Not only was there a section where the French horns had the melody (which was right at the edge of my range) but I also had to practice using a stop mute on low notes, and get comfortable with playing a very low note on my own. Well technically it was with Lucas but half the time he wasn’t there so I had to be able to find the pitch on my own. Love ya Lucas
    3. I think our band would do well to work on listening across the ensemble. I noticed a few times that one section would start to speed up without the other, or some would begin to drag, and we didn’t stay with each other. It was never to the point that I think the audience would notice, but it’s definitely something we can improve on.
    4. Shout out to Sam O. Your basoon solo was really good! It sounded great at the concert, and it made finding my entrance a lot easier too! Thanks man!

  19. 1) If I were to do a CMP project on one of our pieces, I would do Festal Scenes. I would love to know what the composer was thinking of when composing a piece like that and what inspired him to create it the way he did.
    2) The piece that requires the most preparation for me personally was Festal Scenes. It required a lot of technical work, and it was a good challenge to be able to play a piece that worked a lot on moving our fingers faster and double tonging at a super fast tempo.
    3) I would like to spend time working on my vibrato more so that I can bring out that even more in solos. Also tuning the lower notes as a section as well as the higher ones.
    4) Shout-out to Rachel for “sleighing” the timpani part in Festal Scenes!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1. I would do a CMP project on Festal Scenes, because I think it would have been a good opportunity to talk about the technique of traditional Japanese drumming and how it connects to the piece.
    2. I needed to prepare Festal Scenes the most because it involved fast playing and a lot of tuning the timpani within the piece.
    3. I can work on being more aware of my volume in the auditorium as compared to the band room, because my some of the parts I played on snare and timpani sounded overpowering on the recordings.
    4. Anna did awesome on her xylophone part in Festal Scenes!

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1) Sleigh Ride; I love playing and hearing this piece every year and I think it would be fun to learn more about the composer.
    2) Festal Scenes because it had the most technical difficulty and was hard to put together individually as well as with the full band.
    3) Work on projecting and continue working on my technique an tone.
    4) Simon Miller for his solo in Horkstow Grange as well as in Sleigh Ride at the end!

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1) I would choose to do a CMP project on Festal Scenes because, similarly to Lincolnshire Posy, there is a story that goes along with each of the folk songs and it would be great to know the stories of each of the parts of the song.
    2) For me, Festal Scenes required the most individual preparation- especially technically- playing low notes and showing contrast between sections of the piece.
    3) I think I can listen better for other sections of the band and be able to hear how parts fit in better.
    4) Shout out to all of the soloists in Festal Scenes- especially to Sam Olson for a great bassoon solo!

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1. I would pick Sleigh Ride because it is my favorite of the four.
    2. Festival Scenes
    3. Matching dynamics and playing rhythems cleaner
    4. Daniel Ringrose

  24. 1.) I would do a CMP project on Sleigh Ride because it is one of my favorite Christmas songs and I always enjoy playing it.
2.) Festal Scenes because my xylophone part at the beginning took some practice to get the timing right.
3.) I could improve timing and making both my hands play more equally for mallets.
4.) Shout out to Sarah Bennett for rocking her mini solos in Festal Scenes!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1. I would do a CMP project on Lincolnshire Post because of it's rich history.
    2. Festal Scenes required lots of work for the trumpets.
    3. I can personally work on being more expressive and practice better dynamics.
    4. Shout out to all the soloists in Concert Band !!

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1) I would enjoy doing a CMP for Festal Scenes, because I would find the culture behind each melody to be interesting.

2)Once more, Festal Scenes took work for all of us, and especially so for the many soloists.

3)I need to remember each and every bit of articulation- where slurs are, what all should be tongued, etc.

4)Tubas nailed the base parts. Good job.

    1) If I was going to do a CMP project I would to it on the piece Prelude and Fugue in Bb major. It was my favorite piece and I would like to learn more about Bach.

    2) The piece Festal Scenes required the most individual practice. There were a lot of tricky rhythms that required a lot of practice to get correct. Also, tuning the high C took a lot of practice!

    3) Going forward, I can work on tuning and rythems. While I worked hard on those for this concert, I can always improve!

    4) Shoutout to Rachel Yurik because she absolutely nailed the timpani part in Festal Scenes! It sounded so good and really added a lot to the piece! Great work, Rachel!

  28. 1. If I were to do a CMP project for one of our pieces, I would make one for Festal Scenes because I would love to show the audience pictures of the festivals that inspired this piece.
    2. Festal Scenes required the most individual preparation because we had to get the piece up to a fast tempo which required a lot of metronome practice.
3.I think I can personally do better knowing what part of the chord I am playing and how to adjust to make it in tune.
    4. Shout out to Sam for his awesome Bassoon solo!

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1) I would do a CMP project on festal scenes because I think the song is very interesting and I would love to learn more about it
    2) the first movement of liconshire posy because it had a lot of fast, low notes and it took a lot of practice to be able to hit them all
    3) I still had some technical issues so for next concert I can work harder and making sure I have them all down
    4) shoutout to Connor for playing the soprano sax really well!

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1) If you were going to do a CMP (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance) project on one of your pieces, which one would it be and why?

-I would most like to do a CMP project on Lincolnshire Posy. The rich history that is put into each movement will make for amazing material to present in video format, and possibly even other media. Each of the 3 movements we performed holds a rich history behind its meaning and interpretation, and a CMP project is the best way to bring out these ideas. Even without background info, Posy still poses a unique blend of sound elements.

    2) Which one required the most individual preparation to present last evening?

-Festal Scenes. This piece was a difficult on to piece together due to its technical demands as well as instrumentation. Shifting time signatures and tempos made this piece a very important on to work out transition issues, as well as entrances and exits for the various instruments. The difficulty in learning the piece, however, paid off tremendously.

    3) Going forward, what can you personally do to improve ensemble performance (fundamentally, expressively, or technically)?

-I'll spend more time practicing the fundamentals that go into percussion. I especially want to focus on building my mallet chops for future songs so I can develop a better sense of tone and dynamic, as well as even focusing on 4 mallet technique to play chord patterns.

    4) Give a shout out to someone that you think nailed an aspect of their performance!

-Rachel Yurik. Phenomenal timpani solo in Festal Scenes that bought out the technical beauty of the piece.

  31. 1) I would do a CMP project on Festal Scenes because I am interested in learning more about the culture of the piece.
    2) I worked on vertical alignment in Festal Scenes.
    3) I could do tempo and rudimental work.
    4) Shout out to Rachel for nailing the timpani solo in Festal Scenes👏👏

  32. 1) I would do a CMP on Festal Scenes. It has an interesting story to it with Ito writing it after receiving a letter from his friend in Shanghai. Its something I'd like to look into more.

    2) The song requiring the most personal preparation was Lincolnshire Posy. Switching to soprano is tough and it required a lot of practice to be able to play through the piece on a different instrument.

    3) Personally, I can improve upon articulations as I ghosted a few in Festal Scenes and I'd like to be able to hit the articulations the way they were written.

    4) Shout out to Annika Olson for her part in the sax quartet. She nailed it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1.I would do a CMP on Festival Scenes because it has the most character and Japanese folk songs.

    2. Lincolnshire posey because movement 6 demanded a lot of extra works for some parts

    3. I could work on being more together with the band rythmicly

    4. Good job Tim Rock for rocking the solo in Festival Scenes

    ReplyDelete
  34. 1. I’d choose sleigh ride because I can double it as an opportunity to bust out the christmas spirit during the school day.
    2. Posy, because there were a lot of individual parts that had to come together to make the piece work.
    3. Personally I need to learn how to tune at low ranges and super high ranges. Ensemble-wise entrances need to be cleaner.
    4. Shoutout to my boy Sam Olson for carrying the band through Festal Scenes with his solo.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1) If I were to do a CMP project I would want to do it on Festal Scenes because it's from a totally different culture and being able to explore and learn about each movement within the piece would be really interesting.

    2) The piece that required the most individual preparation last night personally was Festal Scenes due to the need to get my solo down and to make the entirety of the piece sound as beautiful as possible.

    3) Personally in the future a few things I need to work on would be air support, clarity of tone, and being able to balance between having an expressive sound and a sound that blends properly with the entire ensemble.

    4) S/o to the trumpet section on their spectacular chamber performance!

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1.) I would do a CMP for Lincolnshire Posy because the music is very fun to play and all the movements have a unique background, contributing to the complexity and depth of the piece.
2.) Festal Scenes required the most individual practice due to its fast pace which required fast tonguing.
3.) Going forward, personally, I could work on being more expressive.
4.) I really enjoyed the soloists in Festal Scenes and the final piece that the Symphonic Band performed.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 1)I would do a CMP project on Festal Scenes. I think there is a lot behind that piece that we didn't quite cover in class, and that would help us understand the meaning behind the piece a lot more. Even without any background, it's an amazing piece of music, but I feel that a video explaining it would help the group and the audience enjoy it that much more.

    2) For me, Festal Scenes required a lot of practice to be able to tongue quickly at that range. In addition, we had to do a lot of work as a section to have an equal, clear sound that not only sounded great, but was loud enough to blow everyone out of the water.

3)Personally, I can tend to get lost in the music emotionally, and that makes it hard to stay blended with the group.

4)I'd like to give a shout out to Tim Rock for his awesome baritone solo during Festal Scenes. He's improved so much this year, and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us moving forward.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 1. I would do a CMP project on Festal Scenes because I liked it the most and it would be interesting researching the different folk songs.

    2. Festal Scenes because of the fast rhythms.

3.Improve on dynamic expression and Balance/Blend

    4. I think Simons Horse noise in Sleigh Ride was very nice.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1) I would do a CMP on Lincolnshire Posy because I enjoy the folk songs in the piece.

    2) Prelude and Fugue in Bb took a lot of endurance that I had to work on to make it through the song.

    3) In the future, I am going to know the music to the point where I can give more attention to the conductor in order to be more expressive.

    4) Shout out to the people in all bands that switched instruments for the good of the band. The hard work shows and improved the sounds of the band. Thank You!

    ReplyDelete
  40. 1.) I would do A little tango music because thats the song I visualized the most in my head

2.) The only song I had to actually make sure I got right was a little tango music, like in the beginning and also at 51

3.) We could probably get some more section practice going so we know how we all sound as individual groups

    4.)s/o to all tenors

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1. I would do a cmp on african because its an interesting clash of two different genres of music that I think could make an interesting project.
    2. In my opinion tengo took the most individual preparation as it had lots of solos by almost all of the sections including myself.
    3. In the future to improve I will put in effort to make sure that my sound balances well with everyone else by listening better to how my sound compares to everyone elses.
    4. If I were to give a shoutout to anyone, I give it to the clarinet and flute soloists for their hard work and bravery to play out by themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1) If you were going to do a CMP (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance) project on one of your pieces, which one would it be and why?

I would do a CMP on African Holy Night as it was an interesting and new kind of piece, I'm curious who wrote it and what inspired them. I would enjoy doing some research into that and writing a paper.

    2) Which one required the most individual preparation to present last evening?

Tango required the most individual preparation by the clarinets, and my self, if I and we were louder it would have helped more. Also counting is key in A Little Tango music.

    3) Going forward, what can you personally do to improve ensemble performance (fundamentally, expressively, or technically)?

I need to work on playing louder, expressively and fundamentally that would help, especially with my tone. Technically I need to work more in my rhythm and counting.

    4) Give a shout out to someone that you think nailed an aspect of their performance!

Shout out to Carley in varsity band. She is awesome and a great bassoon player. She did so awesome at it despite switching a few months before.

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1) I would do a CMP Project on African Holy Night because it was one of my personal favorite songs for this specific concert.

    2) I think that everyone needed time to prepare no matter how skilled and ready they/we were. Practice makes perfect.

    3) I need to work on looking at the director more so I can properly stay in time with the song itself.

    4) David with his trumpet solo in tango!

    ReplyDelete
  44. 1) I would do a cmp project on little tango music because I enjoyed it usage of saxophone based melody lines
    2) a little tango music took the most preparation because I had a lot more melody and moving lines than the other two songs
    3) I could work on being more expresive with dynamics, in a smaller band like this dynamics and when you breathe become much more important to have a good sounding performance
    4) shout out to Sebastian for being in 3 different bands and still keeping up with all his music

    ReplyDelete
  45. 1)i would do a cmp project on Tango because it tells an interesting story through music and the changes of moods through the piece.
    2) Kingsland requires preparation of tone and being in tune with eachother for the beginning part where flutes play alone.
    3) We could improve on listening to eachother and being more balanaced throughout all our songs.
    4) shout out to A.J cause she nailed her solos!

    ReplyDelete
  46. 1) If you were going to do a CMP (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance) project on one of your pieces, which one would it be and why?
Tango because we could tell the story about how to piece feels and go more in depth how Argentina music started with s poster or video
    2) Which one required the most individual preparation to present last evening?
Tango because the other songs were mostly with the band and tango had more individual spots with the section
    3) Going forward, what can you personally do to improve ensemble performance (fundamentally, expressively, or technically)?
Work on my scales so then I know more notes and tone with the higher notes
    4) Give a shout out to someone that you think nailed an aspect of their performance!
I want to shout out ellie from varsity because she was first chair in a couple songs and I’m proud of her

    ReplyDelete
  47. 1) I would do a CMP on Our Kingsland Spring because I have a lot of ideas on how to present its flowing and mellow nature through a river or stream surrounded by a thick forest and a castle on the top of a hill.
    2) A Little Tango Music took a lot of time to fully understand what the composer had invisioned for each movement and theme presented throughout the piece.
    3) In the future I hope to master the technique need to play the piece sooner so I can pay closer attention to the musicality of the piece.
    4) Shout our to Connor Arland and Elise Roubinek for killing it on bass and regular clarinet!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. 1.) tango, mainly because the Argentina culture is very interesting to learn about. They have such different types and styles of dancing it’s almost hypnotic

2.) Our Kingsland Spring, just didn’t really seems together.

    3.) Dynamics & vertical alignment

4.) Allison, you’re doing an amazing job. Seriously, you’ve done so much better than I could ever do my couple of years playing. Keep up the good work! :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. 1.) I would do a cmp on a little tango music because with the tango music you can do a lot with the color and type of music
2.) In tango the style took awhile to get down but it ended up sounding great
3.) balance dynamics louder Louds and softer softs
4.) shoutout to the saxes in tango, killed it

    ReplyDelete
  50. 1) I would do a CMP on A little tango music because I would enjoy learning more about the setting of the piece

    2) In a little tango music I practiced a lot on my articulation and 16th notes.

    3) I would try and play louder because you couldn’t hear the 1st part very much during our concert.

    4) Shout out to the clarinet solo in African Holy Night

    ReplyDelete
  51. 1. If I did a cmp project it would be a video
    2. The piece most challenging to me was African holy night because of how fast it was
    3. I need to work on better posture
    4. Shout out to Jacques and Sophia

    ReplyDelete
  52. 1.) If I were to do a CMP, I would do one on African Holy Night because there is not much we know about the composer and why he wrote the piece.
2.) A Little Tango Music took the most individual preparation because there were sections where my part was not the same as the other saxophones.
3.) Going forward I could work on my tone and dynamics.
4.) Shout out to David for improving his trumpet solo.

    ReplyDelete
  53. 1. If I could do a CMP project I would go deeper into the story behind tango.
    2. Tango had a lot of strong baseline so to help with that I practiced a lot on dynamic changes as well as fast fingerings.
3.to continue improving I want to work on my air support to get stronger and longer breathes.
    4. Shout out to the clarinet section for having some difficult parts but sounding nice.

    ReplyDelete
  54. If you were going to do a CMP (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance) project on one of your pieces, which one would it be and why?

I would do a CMP project on tango since it was my favorite piece to play

    2) Which one required the most individual preparation to present last evening?

African took the most individual preparation, i had to practice my solo

    3) Going forward, what can you personally do to improve ensemble performance (fundamentally, expressively, or technically)?

I definitely could work on staying with the band, I got a little off on some parts

    4) Give a shout out to someone that you think nailed an aspect of their performance!

  55. 1) If you were going to do a CMP (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance) project on one of your pieces, which one would it be and why?- I would probably do a CMP project on tango music because it has a lot of cultural music within it like from South America. I would probably study the history of the tango.

    2) Which one required the most individual preparation to present last evening?- African holy night because I played a lot in that piece which caused my lips to get sore and tired quick so I had to mentally prepare myself for that one.

    3) Going forward, what can you personally do to improve ensemble performance (fundamentally, expressively, or technically)?- work on blending and being vertically aligned with my section so we can help the band as a whole sound better.

    4) Give a shout out to someone that you think nailed an aspect of their performance!- David Muller and Tim Rock did a great job last night being the main voices of our section!

A Little Tango music requires the most individual preparation to present last evening because of its technicalities.

Personally I️ can improve technically by playing with stronger and louder articulation to be heard.
    4) Give a shout out to someone that you think nailed an aspect of their performance!

Shout out to the percussion for playing out during African Holy Night. Also shoutout to saxophones for playing with style during Tango.

  57. Ukrainian Bell Carol was not as exciting as I had hoped. Although the dynamics were phenomenal, it was overshadowed by the unsteady tempo and constant rhythmic issues.
Yorkshire Ballad sounded a little shaky, but it was still incredibly played. I especially enjoyed the trombones and saxes throughout the climax!
A Carmen Christmas was a phenomenal way to end the night, with outstanding dynamics, a constant flux of energy and confident playing, and lastly, the transitions were almost perfectly executed! Lastly, I'd like to give a shoutout to the flutes for their intonation and articulation during A Carmen Christmas.

    2. The piece that required the most individual practice was 1941 because I needed time to get the muscle memory of playing the chimes down.
3.personaly I could practice more with a metronome to keep perfect tempo.
    4. I will give a shout out to Logan and Chase in Moscow 1941 because it took them both lots of practice to get the rhythm right and together.

  119. 1. Moscow 1941 because it has an interesting backstory
    2. Moon by Night because basically the whole song I play notes below the staff and at one part I play a high G which took practice
    3. Work on my breathing as it is especially important for a tuba player.
    4. Honestly this is hard for me to pick somebody who actually did a good job so I'm gonna go with Sam Benson because he always does pretty good.

  120. 1. If I had to do a CMP I would do it on Moon by Night because I feel that we didn't learn as much about that piece as we did others.
2.Moscow 1941 required the most individual prep as I had to work on getting the tempo at measure 44.
    3. Going forward to improve our ensemble's performance I should listen to other instruments more.
    4. Shout out to Nick Banker on the timpani at the beginning of Celebrate the Season!

  122. 1) Moscow. All the different parts go together so well and really tell a story and it'd be interesting to know what more there is in detail besides the background info read to us.
    2) And to All a Good Night because of the section features.
    3) Technically. I've been focusing more on hitting the right notes and staying in tune that I often forget to emphasize the articulations to make sure they clearly sound different.
    4) Shout out to AJ on her solo in Kingsland, sounded great

  127. 1. I would do Moscow 1941 because the story behind it is fascinating and I liked the way the music tells it. The song is exhilerating and a fun to play.
    2. Moon By Night because when i had to play i had to make eye contact with the other percussionist to know when to play. The bow part also had to be perfected.
    3. Practice more, express my parts and show dynamics and articulations. Possibly play a little louder next time.
    4. I would give a shoutout to Nick for his part in Moscow and Moon By night. He nailed the chimes and was bomb on the triangle.

  128. 1.) I would do Moscow because it would be cool to learn about.
2.) I think Moon Light took a lot of practice to prepare
3.) I think I could work on listening to the band and blending together.
4.) I’d like to shoutout the people who switch instruments for the concerts.

  129. 1) I would do a CMP on Moon By Night because that wasn’t our strongest piece and I think we needed a better understanding of it.
    2) The one that required the most work from me is Moon By Night because it had the highest and longest notes and it took a lot of energy.
    3) Something i could do to improve would be practicing a lot more.
    4) I would like to give Mia S a shoutout for playing the base clarinet !! Great job girl❤️

  130. 1) If I were to do a CMP project I would it on Moscow 1941. I would like to know the composer's connection to WWII and Moscow.
    2) I think Moon by Night required the most preparation. You had to constantly be counting even through the long parts.
    3) I think we could try to keep the same beat throughout the whole piece.
    4) Shoutout to Ryan for the trumpet solo during Moon by Night. Nice job.

  131. 1) I would do Moscow 1941, because it seems like the piece has a lot of history behind it, from what I heard at the concert.

    2) I think the most prep that I had to do was for And to all a good night because I’m not the best at the bells and I could improve more on my playing skills.

    3) I can set my pieces and music up faster and make it easier to get on task right away.

    4) s/o to Enrique for nailing that claves part and s/o to Nick for slamming those timpani and chimes part :)!! Way to go dudes!!!

  132. 1) I would do Moon by night because I know almost everything about the other 3 peices

    2) I personally had to work on Moon by night because I had to try and keep my dynamics low and learn how to control it.

    3) I can definitely improve my tuning and playing our more whenever i need to do so.

    4) I want to give a shoutout to the people who switched their insturments for this concert for doing great even though it was new to them.

  133. 1). Moscow 1941 because it was a very dramatic piece and it told a story.
2). And to Moon by Night because even though it was slow the dynamics needed work.
3). I can practice more and tone.
4). Trombones did a great job in And to All a Good Night.

    3) Something that I need to work on is being louder and more confident with my playing.

    4) Shout out to Chase, Logan, and Joe for the "bombs" in Moscow 1941. They sounded really cool.

    1. If I were to do a CMP on one of the songs, i would have to choose Moscow 1941. I would do a CMP on Moscow because the idea of making a song out of a battle is intresting, and i would want to know what specific aspects of the battle that the composer actually put into the song.
    2. I would say And To All a Good Night required the most individual preparation because the instrument features had to be masterd by everyone, and couldn't have had just one or two people be good at it, because then it wouldn't really come out as it should.
    3. Personally, I could work on taking more care of my instrument, in the aspects of packing up, as the rush to get to the next class makes me not be as careful as I should. This is also important to how I sound, not only in the fact that a damaged instrument won't sound as good, but also the fact that my octave key sometimes gets messed up means that high D will squeak, or that high A,B,or C will come out sounding as if i wasn't even pressing the octave key.
    4. I think that Evan Thornton nailed his solo in Moon by Night and was also able to pull off the saxophone feature in And To All a Good Night and pull us more up to tempo on that.

  136. 1) I would do a CMP project on Festal Scenes and draw a really creative cartoon using a lot of colors about the parade drawing nearer and nearer until it is right there. Almost popping up out of the page. I think that would be pretty cool idea.

    2) I worked on Festal Scenes a lot, because I had to work on the really fast double tonguing that happens throughout the piece, I also had to work on tuning (specifically my high F, Ab, C) and knowing when to move my head down or up or, roll in or out, to be in tune with the other flutes, because that was a very big think at the very beginning on the piece. I also had to use the metronome a lot to not drag or slow down, and also when to breathe, because I end up having to breathe at the most inconvenient places and it is really annoying on my part.

    3) Going forward I feel that I can improve by definitely listening more because there was a point to every song where I usually did not pay attention to a specific color and all of the sudden I could notice it and that was really cool. I also want to get to know my flute a little bit better by sitting down with a tuner and figuring out which notes do what, and what do I have to do to fix them. I have some idea about the main notes (that are generally not in tune), but I am really curious to see, how in tune I really am, because sometimes you just adjust on the spot and eventually get really frustrated because it is either too flat or too sharp and there is no happy medium. I also want to be more expressive because I know that as a person I am afraid to do that for some odd reason, so it is something I have to work on. Sometimes I tell myself while playing solos to get out of my Bach, Beethoven, Chopin comfort zone and add a little me into the piece to make in unique.

    4) I give a shoutout Shona because I thought that she did a really good job on the Bassoon, and she is really good at it. It also created a really nice low woodwind tone to the piece and it was a cool color to here! Keep it up!!!

  137. 1- Lincolnshire Posy. I'd love to learn more on what Grainger intended while writing the different movements of the piece.

2- Festal Scenes took the most individual preparation since it demanded so much technical precision and expression.

3- I can work on staying in tune while playing in extreme dynamics as well as articulation.

4-Shoutout to all of the soloists for playing so confidently!

  138. 1. If a CMP had to be done on one of the pieces we performed on the 11th, I would definitely choose "Moscow 1941". The notes behind the music have a much deeper meaning, describing a major historical event that could inflict many emotions. I'm sure it would be interesting to know what the composer's perspective is on this event, and how he made translated it into music.
    2. "And to All a Good Night", in my opinion, required the most individual preparation for members of the band. I believe this because there were many features where one instrument section really had to perfect their part to make it sound good for the audience. You couldn't try to blend in with the rest of the band, since the rest of the band is not playing in those features. You have to know your part through and through.
    3. As a now 2 month bassoon player, I really need to work on note accuracy and reading the bass clef. By continuing to go to lessons and practicing on my own, I can get better at this, so that I am able to read and play music on the bass clef with no hesitation. I would also need to master fingerings on the bassoon along with reading the bass clef.
    4. Shout out to Sam in Low Brass Choir playing the trombone! He sounded amazing and took up the task of playing with upper class men.

  139. 1. I would do a CMP for A Little Tango Music because the song is a lot of fun in several different ways and I'd be interested in learning more about the inspiration for the piece.
    2. A Little Tango Music required the most individual preparation because of the technical difficulty.
    3. Personally, I can work on getting more into the music, and working on endurance.
    4. Shout out to Varsity for the sirens/bombing part of Moscow 1941, it was really eerie and just generally awesome, and shout out to Sarah Hughes for her solos because she's amazing.

  140. 1. If I had to do a CMP on one of the songs that we performed in the concert, I would do it on Moscow 1941, because it had a strong sense of storytelling. It had a lot of interesting features that represented different parts of the history.
    2. The piece that needed the most individual preparation was Moon By Night. It was very slow and lyrical and required a lot of focus to stay in tune and blend with the rest of the band.
    3. Personally, I could work more on tone and blending with the band. Especially since the flute is one of the highest voices in the band its easy to stick out too much.
    4. I would like to give a shout out to Evan Thornton for playing his solo in Moon By Night really well, and adding a lot to the texture of that portion of the piece.

    ReplyDelete
  141. 1. I would do a CMP on Moon By Night to better understand the motive behind the piece.

    2. The piece that required the most individual preparation was Moon By Night, because it was a big change in mood from Moscow, so I had to change my mindset.

    3. I could work more on the difference between dynamics and emphasize dynamic changes.

    4. Shoutout to Leah for her horn part in Moon By Night and filling the space when the rest of the band wasn't playing.
