Performing a concert takes individual dedication, team commitment, and focused execution. All three were demonstrated on February 26, 2018 when our bands took the stage for our MidWinter Concert. I was very proud to see how far we have come in developing cohesive ensemble skills like balance, blend, intonation, and expression. In preparing for Solo and Ensemble season and also starting to look towards our May Concert (hopefully our PEAK performance), we want to reflect upon the 2/26 performance and start to not only set goals for that performance, but build confidence off of the memories of what went REALLY WELL on stage. I encourage you to save recordings of concerts and keep a file of your performances throughout high school. There is no better way to see how your hard work on your instrument is paying off! Enjoy the recordings, and use the rubric/reflection questions to set performance improvement goals for the future. Bravo to all on a great performance!
Sincerely,
Mr. Katzenmeyer and Mr. Shervey

Don Ricardo by Gabriel MussellaCome, Sweet Death by J.S. Bach/Trans. Alfred Reed
Lincolnshire Posy (I, II, IV, V, VI) by Percy Grainger/Ed. Frederick Fennell
Xerxes by John Mackey
1.) I was most excited to perform Don Ricardo because it was a great start to our set. The song is fun and upbeat, I could never get tired of it.
ReplyDelete2.) Posy IV, compared to how we first sounded, the improvement was drastic. There wasn’t very much I could hear that went wrong.
3.) Forest Gump look-alike, Tark Katzenmeyer, Conducts Lincolnshire Posy and others at Woodbury Midwinter concert.
4.) Bassoons, Sam Olson in particular, continuously had good tone and brought the music together with his superb playing. Rhythmic accuracy was one of his best strong suits. Could’ve been louder
1) The pieces I was excited for was Don Ricardo. That piece is by far my favourite in the program, and I feel like it has a lot of character and that a lot of people would really enjoy it.
ReplyDelete2) I feel like Bach was played with the most emotion and accuracy. While it's definitely not my favourite piece on the program, it's a beautiful song and we played it very well during the concert, using a lot of emotion and movement.
3) "Concert Band Plays Best Concert Yet!"
4) Shoutout to all of the soloists that played in the program. All of you played really well.
1). I was most excited to perform Lincolnshire Posy because we all invested a lot of time and effort into more than the other pieces.
ReplyDelete2). I feel like Come Sweet Death was played most accurately because there was minimal mistakes and it was probably the best we have played it
3). Local Highschool band destroys their chops
4.) Shout out to T Rock for dem solos
1) I was most excited to play Xerxes before the concert because I felt that the audience would enjoy something new and more contemporary.
ReplyDelete2) Come Sweet Death, in my opinion, was our best performed piece as I think it was played really well and expression was very good. Although I was most excited to play Xerxes because it's exciting, I believe that Bach was played technically and expressively the best.
3) Band students knock the socks off audience
4) Shout out to Simon Miller for nailing each one of his solos
1. I was most excited for Xerxes because it’s very energizing and my part is the most interesting
ReplyDelete2. I thought Lincolnshire Posy went really well last night; it was probably the best we’ve played it
3. High school band program rocks two part concert
4. Shoutout to Rachel for that smooth snare roll in Horkstow Grange
1. I was most excited for Xerxes because I thought it would be an impressive end to our concert and I feel like our band really comes alive when we play that song, you can tell we have fun with it. I suddenly feel like a giant conquerer riding around on an elephant and that’s always a great time right? We had also seemed pretty confident with the piece heading into it, we didn’t realize the middle would end up getting a little wonky 😅
ReplyDelete2. Come Sweet Death was the best performed piece last night, rather than Xerxes like I had thought. We were very expressive with dynamics, and our entrances were very clean. Everything just fit together like a puzzle. Tones were very good, for the most part no one really stuck out of the ensemble, we blended well together and made some beautiful music.
3.Woodbury Band Bach at it again! (Get it? Bach? Like back? Get it? Get it?)
4. Shoutout to the euphoniums, they were spot on last night! Great tone you guys! Tim’s solos sounded really good too

1. I was most excited to play Posy because I wanted to show the audience how far we've come.
ReplyDelete2. I thought Come Sweet Death was performed the most accurately and expressively because we had good dynamic contrast, blend, and we had good transitional moments as well. This was not the same as number 1 because Posy had a few issues with vertical alignment and perhaps tempo in some places.
3. "Come, Sweet Sound!"
4. Shout-out to Simon Miller for a particularly good trumpet solo in Movement II of Posy! It sounded super passionate.
1) I was most excited to perform Xerxes because I always enjoyed how intense it sounded, like I was in an action movie. Also I love when the percussion can go crazy and get really loud and we haven’t had a lot of pieces where they can really play at all so it was nice to hear our friends play, also the contrasts between the beginning/end and the middle are fun to test and play around with.
ReplyDelete2) I think come, sweet death was the best song we performed last night because our line was really good as well as our dynamic contrast. It’s not the most technically challenging piece in the world, but I believe we killed it with the line and articulation as best as a song like that can be played.
3) Woodbury slays challenging music. How do they do it?
Connor Thornton, slaying the saprano saxophone!
1) I was most excited to play Lincolnshire Posy last night. We've come a long way since starting that piece at the beginning of the year. There are a lot of great moments in Posy that I was looking forward to sharing with the audience.
ReplyDelete2) Come, Sweet Death was probably the most accurate. Posy is a very close second, but we nailed our performance of this piece. We really captured the feeling behind this piece and had almost no audible errors.
3) Woodbury High School Band Plays Music, Audience Seems Pleased
4) I'd like to give a shout out to Jacques for killing it on the trombone. Nice work!

4. Shout out to the Symphony band with I Am. I loved the singing and it gave me chills to listen to.

4. Shout out to Paul for doing such a great job playing the Eb Clarinet this concert!!!
1) I was most excited to perform Xerxes, because I knew the audience would love the piece and we brought a lot of energy to the piece.
ReplyDelete2) I think Come, Sweet Death was played very expressively last night- we really connected and I think it was one of our best runs of that piece. Not the same as Xerxes (#1) because we did make a few big errors in that piece.
3) WHS Concert Band Soars through Lincolnshire Posy!
4) Shout out to Lucy Brooks in Symphonic Winds for a great sax solo!
1) Xerxes, becuase it’s a fun song to play and it’ offers something different style wise.
ReplyDelete2) Posy, it was different to #1 becuase posy is it’s own little thing. It is a fun and complicated piece and trying to play the character of each movement has been fun.... and Xerxes just didn’t go as well as it could of.
3) Xerxes almost slipped on his way to conquer Sparta.
4) concert band to pulling it back together on Xerxes.
1. Before the concert I was probably most excited to perform either Don Ricardo or Liconshire Posy. Posy because we have worked and imporved on it for so long and Don because i just really like it especially the trio

4. Shoutout to simon Miller for a pretty good trumpet solo
1. I was most excited for Xerxes because it was a very different feel and I thought the audience would really enjoy the story we were trying to tell and the effect that we were attempting with the piece.

3. Woodbury Band Makes Two Pieces about Death Sound Fantastic
4. Anna Hildebrandt did an awesome job with her xylophone part in Xerxes, and the third trumpets for their line at the end of Horkstow!
1. I was most excited to perform Xerxes because I really liked my part and I think that the whole band enjoyed playing the piece.
ReplyDelete2. I think Lincolnshire Posy went really well last night. This is different than my answer in question one because we had some tempo and counting errors in Xerxes.
3. Woodbury High School Varsity and Concert Bands Give Great Performance
4. Shout out to third trumpets for nailing the line in the end of Horkstow Grange.
The piece I was most excited to perform last night was Don Ricardo because it was one of our newer pieces that I really enjoyed playing in class and thought gave a good technical challenge to the entire ensemble, which we all overcame.
ReplyDeleteI personally feel we best performed Don Ricardo the best, when we listened to it again I could feel it building up and once we hit the ending where all parts of Don Ricardo come out in a chaotic scene it sent shivers down my spine. I also think we did incredibly well on movement five of Posy, with a few errors here and there with either missed notes or tuning, but overall it sounded like one of the best times we have ever played it.
"Watch out! The WHS Concert Band is Wanted For Murder As They Killed The Show Last Night"
Shout out to varsity band for all the progress they've made so far this year, sounding great!
1) I was most excited to play Posy because we've worked so hard and long on it and it's a lot of fun to play the different movements with different characters.
ReplyDelete2) The best performed piece was Come Sweet Death because it was expressive and we got the emotions across, and it had good intonation. Posy had some technical mistakes, so it wasn't able to convey all the expressions as well as Come Sweet Death.
3) Local band gives passionate performance.
4) Sarah and Sarah played their solos really well!
1. I was most excited but to perform “Xerxes” because I had a lot of fun working on the technically and physically challenging parts of the piece, and I think it painted a cool picture of what the piece was trying to represent.

4)Shout out to Olivia for switching from flute to sax.
1. I was most excited to play Xerxes before the concert started. This was due to the fact that it was a very exciting piece with a really cool percussion backbone.
ReplyDelete2. I feel like Don Ricardo was played most accurately and expressively. As a group we did a good job showing the contrasting styles of the different sections of the piece. I feel like even though Xerxes had the right mood and style, there were several noticeable errors, the biggest one being a group getting a few beats ahead. I think part of the reason this piece wasn't as strong was that we didn't have it for a very long time before performing it. I feel like with another week or two we would've been more confident and a lot of those mistakes wouldn't have occurred.
3. Woodbury High School Concert Band gives a very exciting and expressively performance at their concert.

ReplyDelete2. Polly Oliver felt better after the recordings we’ve done in class, making it easier for us to play in the concert. However Unraveling was better for us since we were in tempo after the recordings and became much better in tune.

ReplyDelete2. I think I am was the most accurately and expressively performed because we knew what the whole meaning was behind it and how important it was to play it amazing and i think we were also very frustrated with piece because we haven’t had a good successful run yet and we had an amazing run of it last night
3.Local high school 10th grade band played a truly memorable concert last night
4.shout out to all the soloists in all the bands and to quinn huppert for slaying that bari sax and to the varsity band for how much they’ve improved and to the 10th graders for singing pretty darn good

I didn't like how we performed I Am at young band festival thingy, but then we put in a lot of work to get it ready for this concert, and I was excited to share it with the audience and see how we'd end up doing.
ReplyDelete2. Most accurately would probably be Into the Clouds, simply because it was easier and more basic and we were able to hit everything right. Most expressive probably would have been I Am simply because the piece allowed us to be that way and that was the point of the song in my opinion. Was not the same as #1 for accuracy because I was excited to play our most exciting piece, but was the most expressive because everyone had to be tuned in.
3. Woodbury HS Symphony Band Gives Challenging, Yet Sub-Par Performance

ReplyDelete2) I felt that Into the Clouds was most accurate because it had the fewest mistakes. While listing to all 3 pieces I found parts that we could have worked on a little more but I felt that Into the clouds had the fewest of those moments.
3) Woodbury Symphony Band slays third concert of the year.
4) I would like to give a shoutout to my saxophone mom Lucy Brooks. She did amazing on her solo and the whole symphonic winds saxophones sounded great.

ReplyDelete2) I think I Am was played the most expressively and it was very accurate compared to when we started it so although we may have made a few small mistakes the expression made up for those. I was most looking forward to playing "I Am". I couldn't wait to hear all the great progress we had achieved! I was also excited to share such a touching piece with the audience.
ReplyDeleteI believe our best piece was, "I Am". Last night we took this piece to a whole knew dimension. We did not just play notes, but we played with heart and soul--sincere expressiveness! This was one of the most meaningful performances we have ever had. As for accuracy, we experienced some small hiccups in every piece, but nothing could prevent "I Am" from topping the list. Our hard-work was clearly evident in our playing.
If I were a critic I would entitle my article, "Glorious Sounds". All of the pieces we played were very robust and sophisticated. "Glorious Sounds" simply summarizes all that these pieces embody.
Kudos to all of last night's soloist, they did a tremendous job! I would like to specially recognize Hannah and Ellen for their significant parts in, "I Am". As a fellow clarinet player, I understand the difficulty of their parts, let alone being soloist. It pleases me to see how much their hard-work and dedication has paid off. They overcame obstacles and their confidence and musicianship has certainly blossomed through this experience!
ReplyDeleteI was excited to perform Polly Oliver before the concert started because I loved its melody.
